Yesterday, Obama accepted his nomination with a speech. He focused on MLK, because 45 years ago yesterday, MLK gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. McCain is also supposed to name his pick for VP today as well, as today is his 72nd birthday.
Also, today is the 3rd anniversary for the landfall of Katrina, and now N.O. is about to get raped again by a hurricane, this time the name is Gustav. Speaking of which, I hope you bought your gas recently, because Gustav is going to hit the gulf coast, and we all know what that means.
Also, according to democracynow.org (and The Hill), Obama staffers censored a line in a fiery Kucinich speech. The line read, "They're asking for another four years-in a just world, they'd get ten to twenty." Also, Asa Eslocker, a producer for ABC News, was arrested yesterday for 'tresspassing', while he was trying to take pictures for a series on the role of corporate lobbyists. Both stories are just simply utter rubbish. This just goes to show that no matter whether their is a D or an R beside the candidate, there will not be any change or evolution in this country without a revolution. We need to start supporting third party candidates, such as Ralph Nader and Ron Paul (though Paul ran Republican this year).

8/27/08: Settling down now
Well today, I think I am beginning to settle into some kind of routine. I also took care of some business today, like getting a paper done, and buying food (now we have a refrigerator). I won't say much, other than today wasn't that bad of a day. I have to go now though, good night.

8/26/08: Today was slightly better
Today was slightly better than yesterday. I *think* I finally got all of my books today, and I didn't lose anything today either. Other than that, not much else happened today, except for the fact I got my P.O. Box, and well, that's about it.

8/25/08: Roller coaster
Today did not start off good for me. First, I found out that didn't have my ol' reliable pencil sharpener. Then, I found out my pos green one didn't work. Then later at the bookstore, I misplaced my water and suddenly my day sunk to a new low. However, I didn't realize this fact until I was in Dunn Hall, all the way across campus. Then I thought I lost my calculator after math class.
But, I got out of math class 20 minutes early. I raced back to the bookstore, and amazingly, my bottle was still there. So my day didn't totally suck. Now I just need a fucking refrigerator and my pencil sharpener, and maybe I will be set (to a point).
Politically, I don't say I support Obama's choice for VP. Biden is from Delaware. DE is also the location of HQ's/major operations for many banks and credit card companies because of their low taxes. Biden also voted for the 2005 bankruptcy bill that helped put us out of our house in Milan when we were going through tough times. He also helped to start the modern drug war when he voted in favor of the Anti-Drug Act of 1986. This is not cool, as the bankruptcy bill was simply a cash in for the financial institutions, and the drug war has only created more drugs, and fucked up innocent people's lives. You probably know where I stand on these things, so I am done now.

8/25/08: First day
Well, today is my first day of class. I need to find me a work study job. I also need to join some clubs as well, but that's beside the point. I spent nearly $100 at Spin Street yesterday, on a poster, shirt, and three CD's. I don't think I will be going back for a while (hopefully at least until 9/30, when the new Amon Amarth album is released).
I think I might be running out of food soon, so the refrigerator that my roommate's family got better come in soon. I didn't start out on the right foot this morning because my clean pair of socks fell into the toilet. I am done for right now, I have to get to class.

8/24/08: Life
Well, yesterday I had some fun with my friends here on campus. I think I found Stephen (and his band) a guitarist by the name of Andrew. I gotta say, he could be going places.
I don't have too much to say today, other than that well, I start classes tomorrow. Oh yeah, I think I now like the band Cellador. Also, I got a decent enough bargain (Exodus- Fabulous Disaster) for about $7 at spin street yesterday.

8/23/08: Obama chooses VP pick
Well, it is official. Barack Obama chooses Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. Obama did this as a political move to have someone with foreign policy experience, something of which he lacks. Biden has a good 30 years of it, so if he wanted to have some foreign policy creds, he may now have some.
That said, Joe Biden ran in the 2008 presidental election, alongside Obama. For Obama, this may not come as good news, as Biden was considered a 'fringe' candidate by dems, and thus, hasn't been given the nomination. Personally, it is better than Hil-dog, as Obama would run the slight chance of 'turning up missing' if you know what I mean. ;)
Also, a light may be at the end of the tunnel when it comes to Iraq. The deal being struck out is that we would be out by 2011. However, I believe that it is imperative to get out now (or at least ASAP). We shouldn't have to go another $1-1.5 trillion in debt for something where a few corporations profit from. Also, people & Iraqi cameramen such as Ali al-Mashhadani, wouldn't be imprisoned without probable cause for 26 days by a foreign occupator. By the way, this is the second time he has been wrongfully held, the first time was held for five months.
I don't know about you, but I think that this would be called hypocrisy, as this goes against the Constitution, supposedly the supreme law of the land. Unfortunately, it looks like neither of our mainstream options are going to do us any good, as since it is looking more likely Obama can get away without being accountable from his supporters, he is not going to help us out, and as for McCain, well, just look at him. Lying about how many properties he owns (his staff claimed he had four, but actually he has seven, worth about $14 million total).
Also, Dubya recently told doctors that if they don't want to because they object, then they don't have to provide abortions or birth control to those who may want/need it. As for that, well, this is nothing new. Now however, if the employer doesn't accomodate, then they lose federal funding. Again, the loss of freedom for the many by the hands of a few.
Enough of that for right now though. Right now, I am doing okay. I helped my friend Andrew move in yesterday. I will take him over to Spin Street today (after I get my money) and show him around. I better get going soon though, some rain from Fay is coming in.

8/22/08: Welcome to my new new blog.
My name is Kyle Watkins. I am now a college student @ the University of Memphis. I will be blogging about items such as my personal/college life, philosophy, politics, music, and other things of the sort. So, lets begin.
Yesterday I moved into my dorm room. I said goodbye to my parents and sister. Some of the things I do not care for that I can already tell is that I am not going to be able to download music (shite), which throws a wrench in my plans since I was considering upgrading my iPod with my refund money to 160 gigs. Since I only have painfully slow Verizon Wireless internet at home, that hindered my downloading abilities. So, instead I will probably continue buying CD's and hope I have better internet to download underground (<1000 copies) when I get back home for winter break.
Well, in politics, Obama and McCain are both very close to choosing their VP's. Let me start out by saying this: I do not support either candidate, be it the flip-flopping of Obama or the continuation of Dubya's policies of McCain. There, I said it. Obama has said he has already decided his choice, and that he would send a text message to all his supporters on who he/she is. McCain on the other hand, will wait until twelve hours after Obama presents his acceptance speech @ the DNC, which just so happens to be his 72nd birthday. That just sounds sinister to me.
As for the Olympics, the US is still ahead in medals, with China owning a commanding lead in gold medals. However, I feel that China has been cheating, specifically in their gymnastics games. Their very own state media reported that their birth certificates made them too young to participate. They reported that some of the athletes were fourteen years old, when IOC rules state you must be sixteen. Some of these athletes are gold medal winners. The Int'l Olympic Cmtee. however, is going simply by their passports, which state that they are sixteen. I think their should (no, must), be an independent investigation into this matter.
However, this story also shows what journalism can do if it is not restrained by repressive forces, such as governments, armies, religions, or corporate interests. Much like the Vietnam War was back in the 1960's-70's, and with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This is just one of the benefits that journalism reform can have, and that we must continue the struggle to make journalism hold our institutions accountable.
